About Page Affairs

Page Affairs is a small web design, editing, writing and teaching studio in Melbourne, Australia. It was established in 2008 by me, Ralph Mason—a web designer, editor, author and teacher.

This site aims to be a repository of useful tips on Web Design, Words and related topics—many of which are intended to complement the digital texts of my other site, Books for Learning.

I do not profess to be an expert on words or web design. The tips and articles on this site are aimed mainly at beginners, who may benefit from what I have learned in my exploration of web design and word usage. Hopefully the offerings will refine with time, and visitors are most welcome to help in this process. At heart I am a teacher, and when I learn something interesting it is in my nature to want to pass it on.

In my spare time I lurk around the excellent SitePoint forums, helping out where I can as a green-badged Advisor. If you have a web-related question of any kind, I recommend you head over there, as the forums are very active and full of helpful people. Don’t hesitate to PM me and say hello!

Books for Learning

Through Books for Learning I aim to provide short, printable ebooks that teach the essentials of web design and related topics in clear, easy-to-follow steps. Authors are welcome to submit works for publication, and I'd also like to hear from any potential editors and reviewers.

Design of this Site

For this site I have used a doctype of HTML 4.01 Strict, having moved away from XHTML. (You can read why I choose HTML 4.01.)

This site’s pages are sized in ems and percentages, making them nicely elastic and fluid and very adaptable to various screen sizes. A max-width prevents the content from being re-sized off the page. (Hit ⌘ + [Mac] or Ctrl + [Windows] a few times to see what I mean.) I quite like this layout, and I explain how it works in my Fluid, Elastic, Fantastic! post.

Logo

The Page Affairs logo (which is also used for Books for Learning) was created by Luke Featherston of Featherston Design. Thanks Luke!

Services

My bread and butter is mainly derived from designing websites and editing copy for print and web. A little more detail about what I can do is found on the Services page.
